Since his first paid gig at the age of 11, JJ Wheeler has amassed a wealth of experience in over 1000 performances in the 20+ years since. JJ turned professional after leaving the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 with BMus and Master of Arts degrees (1st Class and Distinction honours).
Specialising in Jazz and Western Popular Music styles (Pop, Rock, Soul, Blues etc.), he has toured across the UK and performed in venues around the world from Europe to Africa to Asia with artists varying in style from Jazz, Pop/Rock, Musical Theatre, Contemporary Classical, Orchestral to Cuban music.
In 2012 JJ was the drummer for the full 3-month run of English Pocket Opera Company’s ‘Ring Around The World (an Olympic musical)’ in London whilst also running his own group, the JJ Wheeler Quintet, twice touring the UK and releasing their debut album Unconventional to critical acclaim. JJ has performed on various recordings and was named as “One to watch” by JazzWise magazine.
JJ has performed for live and recorded broadcasts on BBC television, ITV, BBC World Service and for various radio stations, including a live broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall for BBC Radio 3 as part of the BBC Proms 2012. Venues performed include Wembley Stadium, The Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall and many more.
To date JJ continues to perform regularly across the UK with bands based in London and the North West, as well as providing remote recording sessions for artists from his own recording studio, established in 2018.
