The JJ Wheeler Quintet formed in 2009, mainly playing originals written by JJ and have been likened to the bands of David Binney, Brian Blade and Chris Potter.
The group features Charlie Portas (Tenor Sax), Chris Maddock (Alto Sax), Ralph Brown (Piano) and Tom Moore (Bass).
 
 
Projects
The Labyrinth Quartet have been playing together since 2007, almost exclusively focussing on original tunes. The group gigs regularly around the Birmingham area and were nominated for the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in 2009.
Other members are Toby Boalch (Fender Rhodes/Synthesizer), Joe Howell (Guitar) and Tom Moore (Electric Bass).
Steve Tromans/JJ Wheeler Duo is an exciting new collaboration between JJ and pianist, Tromans. The pair met by chance on a hotel function gig, immediately striking up a musical dialogue based around extraction and expansion of standard repertoire.

JJ Wheeler’s Resonance Quartet are a brand new project-based group to be revealed in 2012!
Featuring specifically selected musicians from the creative improvisation scene, this exciting new group will be unveiling compositions focussed on improvisation, informed by mathematical and systematically arranged concepts.
This exploration in sound, improvisation and challenging concepts is sure to invigorate listeners everywhere.

NOYALE COLIN/FLORENCE PEAKE/JJ WHEELER Rhythmic Trialogue is an intriguing cross-art collaboration exploring the boundaries of Rhythm and the language entailed within.
 
At the edge of perception, rhythm marks time. It cuts, flows or disrupts - and creates relationship. Using improvisational structures, two dance artists and a musician create a web of relations with each other, with spectators and with time and space.
